Just a short drive from Sydney take in the wonders of The Blue Mountains

Situated in the South Eastern sector of the Australian land mass in the state of New South Wales, a considerable portion of the the Blue Mountains has been incorporated into a World Heritage Site made up of one conservation reserve and 7 national parks. The area is a plateau of predominately sandstone and is scarred by up to 760 meter deep gorges.

By the time Europeans had arrived, the area had been inhabited by the Gudungurra people for a few thousand years. Traces of their early settlements can be found at the Red Hands Cave near Glenbrook, and depict children’s and adults stencilled hand drawings while close by at Wentworth Falls, grooves ground into the rocks bear testimony to the manufacture of simple tools having been ground and sharpened by rubbing them against the rock. Carved representations of animal tracks and traces of an occupied cave have also been discovered at Kings Tableland Aboriginal Site and date back about 22,000 years.

The area was originally known as the Carmarthen and Lansdowne Hills, named by Arthur Phillip, governor of New South Wales, after Europeans had settled in and around Sydney in 1788. However, the locals preferred Blue Mountains due to the blue haze around the mountains when viewed from afar.

There are a variety of climates prevalent in the area all depending on altitude. Daytime summer temperatures around Katoomba at 1,010 meters vary between the low 20′s to around 30 degrees Celsius. Normal temperatures at night hover around the low teens. In winter temperatures can range between -3 degrees at night to about 12 or 13 degrees Celsius during the day. Snow falls two to three times a year at the higher altitudes, but is absent at the lower warmer mountain areas. In the upper mountain areas, annual rainfall hovers around 1,050 mm and there are a few misty days.

The highest ridges support Eucalyptus forests as their predominantly natural vegetation. Above the cliffs on the edges of the plateaus are more heath like plants. Down in the shelter of the gorges is where the temperate rainforests thrive. Hanging swamplands consisting of reeds of button grass embedded in heavy black soil, abound.

An important and popular private owner tourist attraction is to be found at Katoomba. It features two main attractions and these are the Katoomba Scenic Skyway and the Katoomba Scenic Railway said to be the steepest funicular cable railway anywhere, having a 52 degree incline for a distance of 415 meters. The centre also boasts a revolving restaurant, a shop and a theatre. For some more information on the Blue Mountain attractions and adventures, visit our blog.

A well known landmark, the Three Sisters rock formation, is also near Katoomba and overlooks the Jamison Valley. As legend has it, the three sisters were in love with three tribesmen from outside the area. Tribal laws prevented them from marrying and a battle erupted between the tribes. To protect the women, a tribal elder turned them into stone. He was killed during the fighting and no one could change them back again. However, it has been shown that the legend was fabricated by a local character, presumably to create interest in the landmark.

A walking trail past the Three Sisters from Echo Point, descends to the bottom of the valley. The Blue Mountains visitors not wishing to climb back up the steps, can ride in the train for a reasonable fee.

If you are interested in a wonderful weekend away in the Blue Mountains, there is a great variety of Blue Mountains nsw accommodation available to suit all budgets and needs.

Located on the shores of Loch Linnhe, Fort William is a great location to make an overnight stop on the way to the city of Inverness. It’s also a great spot for checking out Ben Nevis, which is the highest mountain in Scotland. In fact, there are several reasons to go to this historical region.

Fort William is amongst the key stops on the West Highland rail line which starts at Glasgow’s Queen Street station and ends on the west coast. There are three trains per day that take this route.

One of the leading sight-seeing opportunities of Fort William is the ruins of the Old Inverlochy Castle. This particular castle, built in the thirteenth century, was the backdrop of a very famous fight. If you happen to take a look at any Scottish history book, the castle is almost always highlighted in impressive detail. In 1645, an army of Scots conquered government forces losing 1,500 men in a day.

One more popular destination in this area is named Neptune’s Staircase. Situated in the northwest section of Fort William, this group of nine locks was created close to the same time frame as the Caledonian Canal. Among Scotland’s most well-known engineering successes of the 19th century, this staircase is recognized as being the avenue for reducing the length that was needed to move items from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, it permitted people to avoid the dangerous storms that often hit the northern tier of Scotland.

For people who adore store shopping, the Granite House is a favorite vacation spot.  Positioned on High Street, this family-run business has been experiencing success for more than twenty five years. The owners think of their store as a little department store as it has a big selection of Scottish jewelry such as contemporary styles, watches and classic styles. It’s possible to actually find Scottish musical instruments such as the pennywhistle. For the youngsters, the store also offers traditional Scottish toys for little ones of every age group.

Yet another excellent stop on the way when touring Fort William is the West Highland Museum. For all those history enthusiasts in the crowd, this collection will display all aspects of the local history. There are also exhibits featuring tartans and folk life. A display of Highland weaponry is also a extremely popular selection.

Much like a great many other parts of Scotland, vacations in Fort William offer a variety of activities especially for those who have an interest in the abundant nearby history available. Between the historical significance and the attractiveness of the location, travelers will invariably remember their journey to this beautiful area.

Finding somewhere to stay is reasonably easy but most places are frequently fully booked. It is far less risky to make your reservation on the Internet prior to setting off. Fort William hotels and guest houses are more costly if they are built on the banks of Loch Linnhe. Fort William bed and breakfast is much less costly in guest houses and hotels on the outskirts of the town or in the centre.
